They <img style="WIDTH: 200px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 281px; MARGIN-LEFT: 1em; MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px" src="http://docs.google.com/File?id=dfjvch3m_135xjwmwkfq_b" />charted from 1958 through 1963 with songs such as "Western Movies" in 1958, (Baby) Hully Gully in 1959 and The Bounce in 1963. After that, they bounced around record labels without much success, though one of their songs - "Good Lovin'" from 1965 - would hit #1, just not their version, but the cover by The Rascals. Today's selection was the released in 1966 and should have been a hit. Not becuase it is a great song but becuase it's subject - Secret Agents - were all the rage in 1966 - James Bond, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., The Pink Panther, and the three referenced in the song, <a id="dzj:" title="Honey West" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honey_West_(TV_series)">Honey West</a>, <a id="i9l8" title="I Spy" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Spy_(1965_TV_series)">I Spy</a> & <a id="tr.3" title="Get Smart" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Get_Smart">Get Smart</a>. </span><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-size:100%;">They don't make records like this anymore. Really. They could not make a record as "dirty" as this today. Don't bother scouring the lyrics for double entendres; that's not what I meant. "Dirty" as in the sound. The recording has a raw sound to it. I'm not even sure it could be duplicated with today's equipment. And I am damn sure it would never be chosen for "American Idol", and that's a good thing. Take a listen and you'll hear what I mean; in particular at the instrumental breaks.</span><br /><br /><br /><b>Lyrics:</b><br /><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">I walk in the house<br />She's got on high heel boots<br />A black trench coat<br />and ??????? suit<br />Under her coat<br />there is a man<br />She's the meanest little girl<br />that I ever had now<br /><br />How my baby loves the Secret Agents<br />How my baby loves the Secret Agents<br />Honey West and old I Spy<br />working together for the FBI<br /><br />Uhmmhumm<br />Ooh baby<br /><br />Said I come home tired<br />I want the news insight<br />Huntley and Brinkley and Walter Cronkite<br />She's telling me I better get<br />"Get Smart"<br />A me and her are gonna have to part<br /><br />How my baby loves the Secret Agents<br />How my baby loves the Secret Agents<br />Honey West and old I Spy<br />working together for the FBI </span><br /></i></b></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family:verdana;"><b><i><div><p><span style="font-size:85%;">Uhmmhumm<br />Woa baby </span></p><p><span style="font-size:85%;">Honey West and old I Spy<br />working together for the FBI<br /><br />Brainwashed my baby to the third degree<br />and now she don't want nothing to do with me</span></p><p><span style="font-size:85%;">How my baby loves the Secret Agents<br />(I said) How my baby loves the Secret Agents<br />Honey West and old I Spy<br />working together for the FBI<br /><br />How my baby loves the Secret Agents<br />How my baby loves the Secret Agents<br />How my baby loves the Secret Agents</span></p><p><span style="font-size:85%;"> </span></p><p><span style="font-size:85%;"> </span></p><p></i></b></span></p></div><div><span style="font-family:verdana;"><b><span style="FONT-WEIGHT: normal"><span style="font-size:100%;"></span></span></b></span></div><div><span style="font-family:verdana;"><b><span style="FONT-WEIGHT: normal"><span style="font-size:100%;"></span></span></b></span></div><div><span style="font-family:verdana;"><b><span style="FONT-WEIGHT: normal"><span style="font-size:100%;">The Cobra's version is speed up, coming in at 2:00, shaving 29 seconds off the <img style="WIDTH: 320px; FLOAT: right; HEIGHT: 235px; MARGIN-LEFT: 1em; MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px" id="raij" src="http://docs.google.com/File?id=dfjvch3m_136htsrj7tg_b" />Olympics version. Besides changing the name as they often do, some of the lyrics have been changed as well. I am pretty sure Rachel sings "and a alligator zoot" after the "black trench coat" lyrics. I can't make out the Olympics lyric ("aloysius suit" ??) but am sure it's not <b><span style="FONT-WEIGHT: normal"><span style="font-size:100%;">"and a alligator zoot". Rachel also avoids the awkward "get 'Get Smart'" by dropping the first "get". One other note: as I said, it is one of my favorite cobra tracks, so much that I have their co-opted the "Uhmmhumm, Ooh baby" as my cell phone ring tone. I have always thought this is what Rachel would sound like when she . . . uhm, never mind. The Cobra version is nice, but really has nothing on the original.</span><br /><span style="font-size:100%;"></span><br /><span style="font-size:100%;">Ruby Johnson was born in 1936 in North Carolina. If you listen to this song and other's by her (and I highly recommend you follow the link at the bottom of the page and buy her album "I'll Run Your Hurt Away") you would think she grew up in a southern gospel environment . . . and you'd be wrong. She was raised in the temple Beth-el faith! She eventually moved to Washington D.C. and recorded for the V-Tone and NEB's labels before being signed to Stax by Al Bell. As best as I can tell she recorded 19 tracks for Stax (I know - there's 20 tracks on the album . . . there are 2 versions of "Come to Me My Darling" which, interestingly enough are different from the version on the <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:3pfuxqw5ld6e">Stax box set</a>). For what ever reason, however, Stax only released 3 singles, of which today's selection was the B Side of the first - Volt # 133 - with the fabulous "<a id="nvk_" title="A terrific story about "I'll Run Your Hurt Away"" href="http://www.oldies.com/artist-biography/Ruby-Johnson.html" target="_blank">I'll Run Your Hurt Away</a>" on the A side.</span><br /><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span><br /><b>Lyrics:</b><span style="font-family:verdana;"><b><br style="FONT-STYLE: italic"></b></span><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family:verdana;"><b><i>There he is</i></b></span> </span><div><span style="font-family:verdana;font-size:85%;"><b><i>Standing in the crowd</i></b></span></div><div><span style="font-family:verdana;font-size:85%;"><b><i>Whenever I see him</i></b></span></div><div><span style="font-family:verdana;font-size:85%;"><b><i>I wanna scream "I love you" out loud</i></b></span></div><div><b><i><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"></span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">The man is my Weak Spot (Yes he is)</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">Sure 'nuff he's my Weak Spot <b>(Yes he is)</b></span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">I said he man is my Weak Spot <b>(Yes he isssss)</b></span></i></b></div><div><i><b><span style="font-size:85%;">Woa Ohh Ohh I'm gonna love him</span></b></i></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">Ooh Ooh I'm gonna love him right now</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"></span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">Things that were silly</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">To see what you want</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">Your heart says a grab it</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">But your pride, your pride says don't</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"></span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">Can't help it he's my Weak Spot (Yes he is)</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">I'm so glad he's my Weak Spot (Yes he is)</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">I said the man is my Weak Spot </span></i></b></div><div><b><i><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"></span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">I can't a help it</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">I can't a help it </span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">The girl can't help it</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">The man, the man, the man</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">The man is my Weak Spot</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"></span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">I see him</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">And things jump up in mind</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">My love stays warm for him</span></i></b></div><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">All, all of the time </span></i></b></div><div><b><i><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"></span></i></b></div><div><b><i><div><b><i><span style="font-size:85%;">I can't a help it he's my Weak Spot (Yes he is)</span></i></b></div><div><b><span style="font-size:85%;">Ah sure 'nuff he's my weak spot <b>(Yes he is)</b></span></b></div><div><b><span style="font-size:85%;">So take your hands off my weak Spot <b>(Yes he is)</b></span></b></div><div><b><span style="font-size:85%;">Ah, don't mess with my weak spot <b>(Yes he is)</b></span></b></div><div><b><span style="font-size:85%;">Cuz I love, I love my Weak Spot <b>(Yes he is)</b></span></b></div><div><b><span style="font-size:85%;">Ah, take you hands off my Weak Spot</span></b></div><div><b><i><br /></i></b></div></i></b></div><div><b><i><br /></i></b></div><div><br /><span style="font-size:100%;"><img style="WIDTH: 328px; FLOAT: left; HEIGHT: 230px; MARGIN-LEFT: 0px; MARGIN-RIGHT: 1em" src="http://docs.google.com/File?id=dfjvch3m_123f6qnr2fm_b" />Did you download and listen to it yet? Awesome, no? Had to be the best thing she ever laid to wax, no? No. It's not. Buy the album and check out "When My Love Come's Down". It was my first exposure to her via the <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:3pfuxqw5ld6e">Stax box set</a> and it blew me away . . . was worth the $100 I paid for the box set. It has been a crazy summer. Not only is my job seasonal (lumber/building</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> materials), my boss</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> passed away in the middle of July. Even more important, he was also my father-in-law, my wife's father. Needless</span><span style="font-size:100%;"><img style="margin: 1em 0pt 0pt 1em; float: right; width: 347px; height: 330px;" src="http://docs.google.com/File?id=dfjvch3m_77hdhfgxgm" /></span><span style="font-size:100%;"> to say, there have been more pressing things to attend to.<br /><br />That being said, I am not posting a cover today. A special treat - an on-air interview from NPR of Rachel and Mary.<br /><br />This was around July 12 in Columbus, Ohio. The wife</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> & I left Detroit on the 13th to catch the show in Pittsburgh. Every time we've seen them, the haven't hit the stage until at least midnight. So we thought we were good to go when we arrived at Mr. Smalls Theater at 11:00. Wrong! They were already into their encores. I don't think the crowd was very interested in the scene, however. The wife & I were able to walk right up to the stage below Rachel. We came in during "Cry On" and they then went into "The Hurt's All Gone", after which the boob next to us requested some Irma Thomas! Rachel had to explain to him that the last two songs <span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">were Irma Thomas!!</span><br /><br />Although we were disappointed in missing most of the show, we did get a chance to talk to Rachel after the show. She was kind enough to share some interesting tidbits with us.<br /><br />We were scheduled to see them again the next night in Cleveland but we got that call that my wife's father was fading. Fortunately we were able to get back in time to be with him at his time of passing.<br /><br />Sorry, don't mean to be so depressing. Take a listen and you'll be rejuvenated by Rachel & Mary's spirit. You'll also understand the title of this post.<br /><br />I'll be back with more posts soon. I promise.<br />Thanks for all the encouraging e-mails<br /></span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;"><b>Download it now:</b></span><br /><span style="font-size:100%;"><a title="White Women Have No Business Singing - The Five Irmas - NPR - 2007 - Part 1" href="http://www.box.net/shared/cscax053um" id="p0ya">White Women Have No Business Singing - The Five Irmas - NPR - 2007 - Part 1</a><br /></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><a title="White Women Have No Business Singing - The Five Irmas - NPR - 2007 - Part 2" href="http://www.box.net/shared/9ogfd4cbsv" id="sz.a">White Women Have No Business Singing - The Five Irmas - NPR - 2007 - Part 2</a></span><br /><span style="font-family:verdana;"><br /></span><span style="font-family:verdana;">Support <a title="NPR.org" href="http://www.npr.org/about/place/corpsupport/majordonor.html" id="cun2">NPR.org</a> </span>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17648698568290445691noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7638826233552241230.post-17488374918503551222007-06-27T18:30:00.000-07:002007-10-24T16:08:53.579-07:00I Can't Please You<span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Song:</span> <a href="http://www.box.net/shared/sm8k9u1u04" title="Download It Now">I Can't Please You</a><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Artist:</span> Jimmy Robins<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Written:</span> </span><span style="font-size:100%;">Jimmy Robins</span><span style="font-size:100%;"><br /></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Year :</span><span style="font-weight: bold;"> </span>1966<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Album/Single:</span> Jerhart # 207 A</span><span style=";font-family:Arial;font-size:100%;" ><br /><br /></span><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="text-decoration: underline; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;">Cobra's Version</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"></span></span><img src="http://docs.google.com/File?id=dfjvch3m_35gtg2hs" style="height: 69px; width: 70px;" align="left" /><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Song:</span> Just Can't Please You<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Released: </span>January 18, 2005<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">Album: <span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"></span></span></span></span><span style="font-size:100%;">Baby<br /><br /><br /></span><img style="margin: 1em 0pt 0pt 1em; width: 320px; height: 240px; float: right;" src="http://docs.google.com/File?id=dfjvch3m_70s2238cd7" /><span style="font-size:100%;">Today's selection is from the other great Mid-western city - Chicago! The Cobra's version is much faster, getting the</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> job done in 1:34. Perhaps they were able to cut the 14 seconds by not repeating the chorus (oh, my lover) after each stanza. Also, Rachel tweaked the third stanza of the third verse - "<span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">Now that I see his face, I will weep</span>" - to something I can not make out, I think it is "<span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Now that his feelings say I will be</span>", but can't be sure. Draw your own conclusion as to why, with all these talented people around him, he wasn't more successful himself.<br /><br />He started off in 1955 in Los Angeles with his cousin, Rip Spencer, in a variety of vocal groups. It was Brice's father who, through jazz pianist Lloyd Glenn, that put them in touch with "Bumps" Blackwell. Calling themselves the "Valiants", they actually were the first to release "Good Golly, Miss Molly", one of the songs Bumps</span><span style="font-size:130%;"> had written (Little Richard had recorded it before them but the Valiants were the first to actually release it). It was the flip side of one of two records they would every have chart - "This is the Night" (#43 R&B / #69 Pop). The other chart success they enjoyed was as members of the Alley Cats with "Puddin N' Tain" - released in 1962 on Phil Spector's Phillies Label (Brice was a co-writer of the song as well).<br /><br />This brief bio was culled from Marv Goldberg's excellent R&B Notebook - <a title="check it out for yourself" href="http://home.att.net/%7Euncamarvy/Valiants/valiants.html">check it out for yourself</a>.<br /><br /><a title="Brice had 5 records released on the Madison label from 1960 to 1961" href="http://www.soulfulkindamusic.net/bcoefield.htm">Brice had 5 records released on the Madison label from 1960 to 1961</a>. Four were as a member of the "Valiants", with today's record being released simply as "Brice Coefeild". Interestingly enough, despite the thoroughness of the aforementioned</span><span style="font-size:130%;"> Marv Goldberg's R&B Notebook, there is no mention of this record. The song writing credits go to the legendary Hank Ballard (<a title="thought jazz keyboardist sometime get's credit for writing it as well" href="http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE47E1AD84BA47420CB863657DBB177FC29DD4BFB9C0A25581BD2B02554891875EA58E08793FDF86AB671B0FD2EA45D43D0C0EA51F6DD6E2D5DF0&sql=17:244876">thought jazz keyboardist Les McCann sometime get's credit for writing it as well</a>). I would have to assume it was recorded/released late in 1960, to capitalize on the success of Chubby Checker's massive hit earlier in the year - "The Twist" (which was also written by Hank Ballard!).<br /></span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"> Lyrics:<br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;">(Cha Cha Cha)</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">(Cha Cha Cha)</span> <span style="font-style: italic;">(Cha Cha Cha)</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Come on baby<br />Let's do the Twist<br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;">Come on baby<br />Let's do the Twist<br /></span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">You look fine, yeah<br />when you go like this<br /><br />Tell me, baby<br />Have you seen my sis ?<br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;">Tell me, baby<br />Have you seen my sis ?<br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;"><br />She knows how to rock<br />and do the Cha Cha Twist<br /><br />Hully, hully gully<br />Slop and Madison, too<br />When you do the twist<br />to a beat like this<br />You can Cha Cha with your baby too<br /></span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Your Papa's sleeping<br />and your Mama's not around<br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;">Your Papa's sleeping<br />and your Mama's not around<br /><br />Well come over here, baby<br />we're gonna tear the house down<br /></span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Hully, hully gully (shake your shoulders)<br />Slop and Madison, too (hit it)<br />When you do the twist<br />to a beat like this<br />You can Cha Cha with your baby too<br /></span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Your Papa's sleeping<br />and your Mama's not around<br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;">Your Papa's sleeping</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">and your Mama's not around<br /><br />Come on baby<br />we're gonna tear the house down<br /><br />Eeyaa (?) It was the flip side to</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> what is considered his finest release - "Baby</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> Come On Home" (having heard both sides I much prefer </span><span style="font-size:100%;">today's selection</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> - the B-side). Hoagy recorded sides for many different labels but this was the only one released on Atlantic. Not sure why it's his only Atlantic release, since he often was produced by <a title="Bert Berns" href="http://www.bertberns.com/bio.shtml">Bert Berns</a></span><span style="font-size:100%;">, and Berns did a lot of work for</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> Atlantic (he took over as lead producer and songwriter from Jerry Lieber / Mike Stoller in 1963).<br /><br />Which brings us to the next point. Not only did Bert Berns produce the song, he also co-wrote it. His middle name is "Russell" and often used the</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> alias of "Bert Russell" for his song writing credits. But then again, Bert Berns didn't really write it (very <a title="Led Zepplinish of him to take credit" href="http://www.last.fm/user/smellslikechris/journal/2006/08/6/200504/">Led Zepplinish of him to take credit</a></span><span style="font-size:100%;">, however). It was 'adapted' from a folk-blues song covered by Bob Dylan eponymous <a title="first album" href="http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:s7d8vwpva9yk">first album</a></span>, <span style="font-size:100%;">credited to Eric Von Schmidt, Dave Von Ronk & the Reverend Gary Davis. <a title="Eric Von Schmidt claims to have nicked it from a Blind Boy Fuller song called "Baby, Let Me Lay It On You"" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby,_Let_Me_Follow_You_Down">Eric Von Schmidt claims to have nicked it from a Blind Boy Fuller song called "Baby, Let Me Lay It On You"</a></span><span style="font-size:100%;">. Who knows where he got it from. Maybe he wrote . . . somebody had to! As far as the Cobra's version is concerned, however, it is</span><span style="font-size:100%;"> obviously a take on the Hoagy Lands version.<br /><br />The song was also covered by the Animals in 1964. They changed the name - "Baby Let Me Take You Home" - and lyrics a bit. They also blues'd it up a lot, skipping the a cappella intro. I suspect it was out of the range of the growl of Eric Burdon vocals. They did add a very cool 'bump & grind' in the middle, however.<br /></span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"> Lyrics:</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">I've seen a lot of pretty girls</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">In my time</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">I never really paid them any mind</span> <span style="font-style: italic;"><br /><br />And baby when I saw you</span> <span style="font-style: italic;"><br />Somehow I knew</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">That you were the loving kind<br /><br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;">Baby, let me hold your hand</span> <span style="font-style: italic;"><br />Baby, let me hold your hand</span> <span style="font-style: italic;"><br />Let me feel it right there</span> <span style="font-style: italic;"><br />and I'll take you anywhere</span> <span style="font-style: italic;"><br />If you only let me hold your hand</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;"><br />(Oh, my hand is right there<br />if you take me anywhere<br />you know, baby you can hold my hand)<br /><br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;">Baby, let me be your man<br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;">Baby, let me be your man</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Let me hold you real tight<br />Let me love you all night<br />I just want to be you man (that's all, baby)<br /><br />(You can hold me real tight</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">You can love me all night<br />Oh yeah, you can be my man)<br /><br />Now I want you to listen to me (looky here):<br /><br />Now I want you to be<br />a full time love<br />'Cause the kind of love I got for you</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">is really strong<br /><br />Now these arms are made<br />for just your size<br />So get home, baby,<br />where you belong<br /><br />Now you know I don't mind<br />(??? unintelligible) when a kings a leave flirt </span><span style="font-style: italic;">(??? unintelligible)</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Every man has to go through some of that<br /><br />But I'm here to let you know<br />personally, baby<br />exactly where it's at<br /><br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;">Baby, let me take you home</span><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">Baby, let me take you home<br />Oh, the walk will do you good<br />You know'll talk the way I should<br /><br />(Oh you talk the way you should<br />and the walk will do me good<br />Come baby, you can take me home)<br /><br /></span> <span style="font-style: italic;">Come home, baby (</span><span style="font-style: italic;">Come home, baby)<br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;">Come home, baby </span><span style="font-style: italic;"> (</span><span style="font-style: italic;">Come home, baby)<br /></span><span style="font-style: italic;">Come home, baby</span><span style="font-style: italic;"> (</span><span style="font-style: italic;">Come home, baby) . . .<br /></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/177/401905590_b6e8d215b8_b.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 192px; height: 171px;" src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/177/401905590_b6e8d215b8_b.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-style: italic;"> </span>Now, if you try to follow these lyrics with the Cobra's version you'll get lost. But since I can play the guitar, what the hell do I know.<br /><br />It is one of two songs on "Baby" with "baby" in the title ("Baby Help Me"). Toussaint's talents has touched many a great song, from Ernie K-Doe's "Mother In Law", Lee Dorsey's "Working In A Coal Mine" and "Ruler of My Heart" which was 'adapted' by Otis Redding as "<a title="Pain In My Heart" href="http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE47E1AD84BA47420CB863657DBB177FC29DD4BFB9C0A25581BD2B02554891875EA58E08793FDF86AB671B0FD2EA45D43D5C0EA5EF6DF672D4CF0&sql=33:2s820roat4sv">Pain In My Heart</a></span><span style="font-size:100%;">" (which was also covered by the Rolling Stones). Hi-Q was a subsidary of Fortune Records. Fortune was a very influential and powerful label in Detroit in the late 50's / early sixties (we'll cover Fortune in more detail on a later post). In looking over some of the other acts on the <a title="Hi-Q discography" href="http://koti.mbnet.fi/wdd/fortune.htm">Hi-Q discography</a> I recognize some other Detroit acts - John Lee Hooker, Eddie Kirk, Dell Vaughn. Then again, there are plenty of other acts that probably did not come from Detroit - Cherokee Chief and his Oaklahoma Rockers, Ralph Davis and the Western Rhythm Boys & Shorty Frog and his Space Cats. So I could be wrong . . .<br /><br />Lyrics:<br /><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Baby</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Baby</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">You starting laughing</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">when I told you I love you</span><br /></span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Baby</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Baby</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">You said your love was true</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">But I'm laughing at you</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Ohh Ohh (yeah)</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"> Uhh Ohh Ohh Ohh</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Baby</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Baby</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">You had your winning spree</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">and now you say you want me</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Baby</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Baby</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"> You said your love was true</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"> But I'm laughing at you</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"> Uhh Ohh Ohh Ohh (yeah)</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"> Uhh Ohh Ohh Ohh</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">I know that when you go</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">You'll come and let me know</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">That you were tired of being a fool</span><br /></span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Baby</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Baby</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"> You said your love was true</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"> But I'm laughing at you</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"> Uhh Ohh Ohh Ohh (yeah)</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"> Uhh Ohh Ohh Ohh</span><br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">Uhh Ohh Ohh Ohh (yeah)</span></span><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/41/171522001_6c1e803ac7_o.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer; width: 214px; height: 161px;" src="http://farm1.static.flickr.com/41/171522001_6c1e803ac7_o.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"> Uhh Ohh Ohh Ohh</span></span><span style="font-size:85%;"><br /></span><br />While the original is a fast paced (for 1957) piano based R&B, the Cobra's is an even faster guitar based rocker, replacing the original's sax solo with a tasty guitar solo (by Maribel ?), shaving 15% off the total time (1:52 vs 1:35). I bought a spindle of CDR's & they came with 100 free mp3's from <a href="http://www.emusic.com/" target="blank_" title="emusic.com">emusic.com</a>. To say emusic's selection is limited would be kind (however, if you are a music freak such as myself, it is a cheap and legal way to explore different genres). I believe I did a search for "<a href="http://www.emusic.com/search.html?mode=x&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;QT=detroit&x=0&y=0" title="Detroit">Detroit</a> " on a whim & came across an album called "<a href="http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=ADFEAEE47E1AD84BA47420CB863657DBB177FC29DD4BFB9C0A25581BD2B02554891875EA58E08793FDFB74AB7BA7E02CA45A099FCEE454FCD665392DED93&sql=10:4jrsa9wgq23h" title="Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit">Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit</a>". Pull it up and see the White Stripes listed - OK, I've heard of them. The rest of the bands listed, however, I had never heard of (and I live in Detroit!). The Come Ons, The Hentchmen, Bantam Rooster, The Detroit Cobras . . . ? What the hell, I have 100 mp3's to download I might as well take a flyer on one or two. So I downloaded some of the songs. Burned them to a disc (along with so other stuff I downloaded - Warren Zevon, Brownie & Sonnie, Pretenders . . . ).<br /><br />I have a 45 minute drive home - about the 40 minute mark I came across "Shout Bama Lama".<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;"> WHOA - What the fuck was that?</span><br />So I played it again. WOW!<br /><br />By this point I am home in my driveway, listening for the 5th time before one of my sons come out to leave - spots me in my truck - I invite him in to have a listen with me - he tells me its great (to appease me) and leaves. Kids don't know shit about about music anyways.<br /><br />Anyways, that was my introduction to the power that is the Detroit Cobras<br /><br />On with the show . . .<br /><br />Today's selection was recorded by Otis Redding & the Pinetoppers in 1960. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otis_Redding">Or was it Otis & The Shooters?</a> Anyways, it was Otis's first record. <a href="http://www.melingo.com/thesoulnet/otis.htm">Or, at worst, his second.</a> The Pinetoppers were a Macon, Georgia band lead by Johnny Jenkins. Johnny saw Otis playing at <a href="http://www.douglasstheatre.org/pages/history.htm">The Douglass Theater</a> and offered to 'play behind him.' At some point Otis recorded "Shout Bama Lama" with the band and had relative success with the song.<br /><br />2 years later, Otis drove (yeah - he was also their driver!) the band to Memphis so Johnny Jenkins & the Pinetoppers could lay some tracks down at the Stax studios. By all accounts the sessions did not go well and since there was time left at the end, it was offered to Otis to record a <a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://www.history-of-rock.com/otispine.jpg"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 259px; height: 212px;" src="http://www.history-of-rock.com/otispine.jpg" alt="" border="0" /></a>song. "These Arms of Mine" was laid down with Johnny Jenkins on piano and Steve Cropper on guitar. The rest, to turn a cliche, is history.<br /><br />"Shout Bamalama" starts with some shouts and screams as if they are at a party (very reminiscent of the Temptations "I Can't Get Next to You" or "Psychedelic Shack" - whether "Shout Bama Lama" was the inspiration for this or not, I do not know). Then the up tempo horn & guitar driven riff kicks in at a frantic pace. Being that Little Richard was also from Macon, Georgia, the song is often liken to a Little Richard screamer. Rightfully so.<br /><br />The Lyrics:<br />(As best as I can transcribe them . . . )<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;font-size:85%;" >"He's down in Alabama<br />I shouting Bamalama<br />Way down in Louisiana<br />Well, well, nobody gone set him down<br /><br />Lord have mercy on my soul<br />How many chickens have I stole<br />One last night and the night before<br />I'm going back to try and get 10, 11 more<br />(unintelligible)<br />I love the chicken baby<br />Shouting Bamalama<br />Well, well, nobody gone set him down</span><br /><span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;font-size:85%;" ><br />?? Rachel did tweak the lyrics a bit (reversing the deacon and preacher for one) but pretty much stays on track. <a href="http://www.metrotimes.com/metropolis/sonic/recordreview.asp?id=11575">By all accounts</a> it was recorded by Jack White (yeah, that <a href="http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:km6ftr2wkl4x">Jack White</a>) in his home studio.<br /><br />It also is a prime example of how the Cobra's take liberties with the names of the songs they cover. The name of the original : "Shout Bamalama". The Cobra's version : "Shout Bama Lama". Minor difference ? Perhaps, unless you are trying to research the song, that is.<br /><br />So if you are not familiar with the Cobra's version, <a href="http://www.emusic.com/album/10713/10713950.html">please buy it</a> (you won't be disappointed). And it goes without saying, if this is first Otis in your library, <a href="http://www.amazon.com/s/103-2289290-5626246?ie=UTF8&amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;tag=mozilla-20&index=blended&link%5Fcode=qs&field-keywords=otis%20redding&sourceid=Mozilla-search">it won't be the last.</a><br /><br />Download it:<br /><a href="http://www.box.net/shared/etb7b3lce2"><span style="font-size:130%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Otis Redding - Shout Bamalama - 1960 - Otis!
